PTFE gaskets,
it's not just Teflon

Not all PTFE gaskets are built the same way, and the difference matters more than it might seem when you're specifying a seal for an aggressive chemical line or a warped flange. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is prized for its near-universal chemical resistance, wide temperature range, and low friction, but pure PTFE has one structural weakness: it cold flows under sustained bolt load.

Two gasket designs have been developed to work around that limitation: flat PTFE enveloped gaskets and modified/expanded PTFE gaskets, and choosing the wrong one for your flange condition can mean a leak path that shouldn't be there.

How DISS-Europe manufactures
custom PTFE gaskets

DISS-Europe produces PTFE gaskets to exact customer specifications rather than relying on a fixed catalog of standard sizes.

Our custom FTFE gaskets are manufactured to precise inner and outer diameters, bolt patterns, and thicknesses, matching flange drawings or physical samples supplied by the customer.

This custom approach means both flat PTFE enveloped and modified/expanded PTFE gaskets can be produced for non-standard flanges, legacy equipment, or specialty applications where an off-the-shelf gasket simply won’t fit.

Our technical engineering guidance is available to help select the right construction and core material for the specific media and operating conditions involved.

Why PTFE gaskets need a construction strategy

Virgin PTFE resists nearly every industrial chemical and holds up across an extreme temperature range, which is exactly why it’s the default choice for aggressive media.

But PTFE also relaxes and creeps under constant compression, meaning a gasket cut from solid PTFE sheet can lose its seal over time as bolt tension bleeds off.

Gasket manufacturers address this in two different ways: by wrapping a resilient core in a PTFE skin, or by re-engineering the PTFE itself to resist cold flow. That split is what separates enveloped gaskets from modified/expanded PTFE gaskets.

Flat PTFE enveloped gaskets

A flat PTFE enveloped gasket consists of a PTFE skin heat-formed and fused around a compressible core, typically non-asbestos fiber, an elastomer, or corrugated metal.

Only the PTFE surface ever touches the process fluid, so the gasket delivers full chemical inertness at the wetted face while the internal core supplies the elastic recovery that pure PTFE can’t provide on its own.

These non-metallic flat gaskets work well on flanges with a good surface finish and standard bolt torque, and it’s a reliable, cost-effective choice for aggressive chemical service where mechanical resilience matters as much as chemical resistance.

Modified and expanded PTFE gaskets

Modified and expanded PTFE gaskets take a different approach: instead of wrapping a core, the PTFE itself is re-engineered.

Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) is mechanically stretched to create a microporous node-fibril structure that’s far more compressible and conformable than virgin sheet.

Modified PTFE, on the other hand incorporates a small amount of copolymer or filler to reduce cold flow and creep relaxation directly in the material.

Because the gasket is homogeneous PTFE all the way through rather than a skin over a core, there’s no envelope to rupture or peel, and the material conforms readily to warped, pitted, or plastic-lined flanges at lower bolt torque than a standard enveloped gasket would need.

The trade-off is mechanical strength: for very high-pressure joints, an enveloped gasket with a reinforced core can outperform it.
